I want to be like Captain Clueless. If I had his power, I could do
anything. It’s an all-in one tool that would get you through any desert or
jungle unscathed.
Captain C doesn’t look like much. Average height, slim, the
slightly rumpled Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops suggest surf dude. At least until
you’re closer and catch him with his shades off. There’s no beach boy glaze in
his eyes, something much deeper swirls there. But it’s subtle.
Subtle.
Balanced. Not bad descriptions of Captain Clueless and his power. If you
stalked him, you’d notice he’s never
in the middle of an argument, or a mob, or any unhealthy energy. It’s not that
he avoids it. His mere presence seems to neutralize it.

If
you pull up a stool next to him and offer to buy him a beer, you’ll learn more
about his clueless power. But you won’t realize you’re learning because it’s so
subtle. At some later time you’ll try to describe it, tossing out words like “dispassionate”
because there is passion and
compassion in his words and reactions to you. You, like me, will keep looking
for other ways to describe the mix of unspoken truth, peace, humor, and hope
that exude from this guy.
If
you’re of my generation, you can’t help but compare Captain Clueless and
characters like Yoda or Kwai Chang
Cain of Kung Fu fame. They’re not bad comparisons. But the Captain doesn’t draw
his strength from doctrine. Although similar in effect, it’s not The Force or
time-honored eastern teaching that guides him. He’s not guided at all. It’s where the affectionate title of Clueless comes from. His words and
actions are in tune with the universe not because they derive from a religion
or philosophy, but because he is balanced all the way down at the cellular
level. He just is in tune. He’s
clueless because he doesn’t have to reason or deduce.
What
an advantage to be that kind of clueless. I spend considerable time trying to
tame my baser instincts, the out-of-tune reactions like anger and self-pity
that fuel stress. If my gut-level reactions were balanced, and stress
minimized, my pancreas and autoimmune system would call a truce. My radicals,
free and otherwise would de-escalate to join a body-wide non-violent support
movement. The ripple effect of clueless righteousness would propagate outward.
My longer-lived, healthier body and calmer, kinder self will exert a positive clueless
influence on family, friends, and anyone on my path.
Who
knows if I can ever attain his power. In the meantime, I’ll train hard. And I’ve
got my Captain Clueless lunchbox and thermos to inspire me.
