Note To Self

Dear Russ of 1976,

I know you’ve read enough time travel sci-fi by now to know I can’t tell you too much about 2012 without risking paradox disasters, but I’ll risk this short note.

First of all, there’s much you’re right about. The world’s full of magic. It’s also full of those who can’t see it. That’s still true 36 years later. You’re also right that relentless money-grubbing will blind you to anything really worthwhile. Of course, you’ve got to live, so remember the names Apple and Google. When a wacko named Jobs takes Apple public in a few years, buy stock (maybe instead of that sound system for the Honda). Just hold it until 2000 and then sell. After the crash, buy Apple again and Google. If you don’t blow it all on a beanie baby collection, it’ll be enough to live comfortably and work at your passions. And that means you can avoid your kryptonite.

Yeah, as in Superman. But your kryptonite is no rock. It’s stress. You are a superman. We all are. These are amazing body machines we inhabit. But they rot from the inside out if you compromise your principles and take the wrong job for any length of time, like you might. For others, it might be the wrong marriage or some other choice that sabotages their health. Just keep a third eye focused inside, and breathe. You are a superman, but stress could make you less than mere mortal.

And watch what you stick in your mouth. Your super powers can’t neutralize poison. You’re not fat and don’t have a single cavity so you think nothing of the Big Mac’s, Dr Pepper, and Chef Boyardee ravioli. Even now in the 21st century, only a few of us realize how bad we’ve been eating. All I can say is, get over any issue you have with fruits and veggies. Those wild-eyed California health nuts have turned out to be right about a few things.

Finally, you need to go spend a little time with your grandparents, your dad, and Uncle Frank.
Do it now.
